Circuit/System Description

The camshaft position sensor circuits consist of an engine control module (ECM) supplied 5 V reference circuit, low reference circuit, and an output signal circuit. The camshaft position sensor is an internally magnetic biased digital output integrated circuit sensing device. The sensor detects magnetic flux changes of the reluctor wheel attached to the camshaft. Each tooth on the reluctor wheel rotates pass the camshaft position sensor and creates a change in the magnetic field. The sensor electronics uses the changes to generate a digital output signal. The sensor returns a digital ON/OFF direct current pulse with varying frequency with 4 output pulses of varying width per camshaft rotation. These represent a picture of the camshaft's reluctor wheel. The frequency of the camshaft position sensor output depends on the velocity of the camshaft. The ECM decodes the narrow and wide tooth pattern to identify camshaft position. This information is then used to determine the optimum ignition and injection points of the engine.

Conditions for Running the DTC

The engine is running.

DTC P0344 00 run continuously once the above conditions are met.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The ECM detects the incorrect number of camshaft position sensor pulses in 12 revolutions of the crankshaft, which is usually within 4 s.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTC P0344 00 are Type B DTC.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P0344 00 are Type B DTC.

Diagnostic Aids

The following conditions can also set the DTC:

Physical damage to the camshaft position sensor or the reluctor wheel

Camshaft position sensor incorrectly installed

Incorrect camshaft position sensor

Play or looseness of the camshaft position sensor or the reluctor wheel more than the customer would desire

Improper installation of the camshaft position sensor or the reluctor wheel

Foreign material passing between the camshaft position sensor and the reluctor wheel

Air gap between the camshaft position sensor and the reluctor wheel more than the customer would desire

Circuit/System Verification

1. Ignition ON, check the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information with a scan tool. DTC P0344 00 should not be set.

2. Move related harnesses/connectors of the B23 Camshaft Position Sensor and verify the engine does not stumble, stall, or change engine speed.

3. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the freeze frame/failure records data.

Circuit/System Testing

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B23 Camshaft Position Sensor.

2. Ignition OFF, test for less than 5 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal 1 and ground.

3. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for a short to voltage, or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

4. Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 V between the 5 V reference circuit terminal 3 and ground.

5. If less than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

6. If greater than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

7. Test for 4.8-5.2 V between the signal circuit terminal 2 and ground.

8. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

9. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

10. If all circuits/connections test normal, replace the B23 Camshaft Position Sensor.
