Circuit/System Description

The exterior rear compartment lid release switch receives a signal from the body control module (BCM). When the exterior tailgate release switch is activated the signal circuit is connected to ground. The BCM applies battery voltage to the tailgate release relay control circuit which energizes the relay. The tailgate unlocking relay is always grounded. When the relay coil is supplied with current, the relay contacts close and connect a battery voltage to the unlocking actuator which then unlocks the tailgate.

Circuit/System Verification

Command the trunk release by using the exterior rear compartment lid release switch. The rear compartment lid release actuator should release the trunk lid.

Circuit/System Testing

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the S58A Rear Compartment Lid Unlatch Switch - Exterior.

2. Test for less than 5 Ω between the ground circuit terminal 5 and ground.

3. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

4. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Trunk Lid/Liftgate Exterior Unlatch Switch parameter is Inactive.

5. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 Body Control Module.

6. Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 6 and ground. Verify the scan tool Trunk Lid/Liftgate Exterior Unlatch Switch parameter is Active.

7. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 Body Control Module.

8. Connect the harness connector at the S58A Rear Compartment Lid Unlatch Switch - Exterior. Observe the scan tool Trunk Lid/Liftgate Exterior Unlatch Switch parameter while pressing and releasing the exterior rear compartment lid release switch. The parameter should change between Active and Inactive.

9. If not the specified value, test or replace the S58A Rear Compartment Lid Unlatch Switch - Exterior.

10. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connectors at the X50A Fuse Block - Underhood.

11. Test for less than 5 Ω between the ground circuit terminal 71 X1 and ground.

12. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

13. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 13 X2 and ground. Verify the test lamp does not illuminate.

14. If the test lamp illuminates, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 Body Control Module.

15. Command the Trunk Lid Unlatch with a scan tool. Verify the test lamp illuminates briefly.

16. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuits test normal, replace the K9 Body Control Module.

17. Test for infinite resistance between the B+ circuit terminal 5 X2 and ground.

18. If less than the specified value, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground.

19. Test for less than 5 Ω between the B+ circuit terminals 5 X2 and 9 X2.

20. If greater than the specified value, test the B+ circuit for an open/high resistance.

21. Connect the harness connectors at the X50A Fuse Block - Underhood and disconnect the harness connector at the M40 Rear Compartment Lid Latch.

22. Test for less than 5 Ω between the ground circuit terminal 2 and ground.

23. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

24. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 1 and ground. Verify the test lamp does not illuminate.

25. If the test lamp illuminates, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the X50A Fuse Block - Underhood.

26. Command the Trunk Lid Unlatch with a scan tool. Verify the test lamp illuminates briefly.

27. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuits test normal, replace the X50A Fuse Block - Underhood.

28. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the M40 Rear Compartment Lid Latch.

Component Testing

Rear Compartment Lid Latch Test

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the M40 Rear Compartment Lid Latch.

2. Install a 15 A fused jumper wire between the control terminal 1 and B+. Momentarily install a jumper wire between the ground terminal 2 and ground. Verify the M40 Rear Compartment Lid Latch activates.

3. If the actuator does not perform as specified, replace the M40 Rear Compartment Lid Latch

Rear Compartment Lid Unlatch Switch Test

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the S58A Rear Compartment Lid Unlatch Switch - Exterior

2. Test for infinite resistance between the signal terminal 6 and the ground terminal 5 with the switch in the released position.

3. If not the specified value, replace the S58A Rear Compartment Lid Unlatch Switch - Exterior

4. Test for less than 5 Ω between the signal terminal 6 and the ground terminal 5 with the switch in the pressed position.

5. If greater than the specified range, replace the S58A Rear Compartment Lid Unlatch Switch - Exterior.
