Removal of pistons (in situ)

(Cylinder head removed)

Remove any burrs or carbon deposits from the tops of the cylinders.

Use lifting beam 83 94 850 and hook lifting cable 87 92 442 onto the gearbox. Disconnect the oxygen sensor leads.

Raise the car and drain the oil. Remove the front exhaust pipe and take off the front wheels and spoiler sections.

Remove the end piece, steering swivel member on both sides and the rear engine mounting. Use tool 89 96 696. Position a lifting table under the engine, raise the lifting table, undo the other bolts and lower the subframe.

Remove the protective plate and sump. Do not remove the sump's locating sleeve from the cylinder block.

Wipe off all surplus oil.
|

Remove the big-end bearing caps and fit protective sleeves (75 19 531) over the studs. Push the pistons and connecting rods out of the cylinders. To ensure that the parts are refitted in their original positions, note the markings on the pistons and connecting rods. Loosely fit the bearing shells and caps back in position on their connecting rods so that each set is kept separately and the parts are not mixed.

Remove the gudgeon pin's retaining ring and drive out the gudgeon pin using a plastic mallet and drift, taking care not to damage the piston and connecting rod.
