Cooling system, overview

The cooling system is of the over-pressure type, with a cross-flow radiator and an expansion tank.

4-cylinder engines

On 4-cylinder engines the coolant pump is located on the right-hand side of the engine and powered by the crankshaft via a Poly-V belt. The thermostat is located in a housing at the left-hand end of the cylinder head.

6-cylinder engines

On 6-cylinder engines the coolant pump is mounted at the front of the engine block and driven by a multigroove V-belt. The thermostat is mounted above the coolant pump between the cylinder banks.

Expansion tank

The expansion tank is mounted in the engine bay on the left. It is connected to the coolant pump and the upper right-hand part of the radiator. The latter connection is for bleeding the cooling system. On cars with a 6-cylinder engine there is also a connection for venting the engine. On 4-cylinder engines the contents of the expansion tank are not circulated round the cooling system.
