“Ticking” Noise from Purge Valve
The cycling of the canister purge valve may cause a customer complaint as a ‘’ticking” noise can be transmitted from the engine compartment into the passenger compartment. Due to the mounting of the valve and related hoses, it is possible for this noise to telegraph through the body of the car so that it sounds as if it is coming from the glovebox area inside the passenger compartment. Follow the steps below to rectify this situation.
1994 900 5-door models
Rubber hose (550mm): 45 27 149
Tie straps (3)
1.
Remove the rubber hose from the inlet of the canister purge valve from the charcoal canister. Remove the small rubber hose (approx. 1-1/2”).
2.
Remove the canister purge valve.
3.
Form a loop with the new hose, P/N 45 27 149, using a tie strap to secure its shape. Be certain the tie strap is not overtightened. See Figure for instructions.
4.
Install the new hose at a horizontal angle, making certain it does not make contact with belts or exhaust pipes. Very loosely tie strap the looped hose to the sheathing of the cruise control cable.
5.
When reinstalling the valve on the outlet side, make certain there is a gap (1/4” or so) so that the hard plastic inner hose does not make contact with the hard plastic of the valve.
6.
Start the engine and run it until the valve activates.
7.
If the ticking noise is still objectionable (inside the car with the hood and doors closed), try replacing the canister purge valve using applicable part numbers as indicated on spare parts microfiche.
