Camshaft position sensor

The camshaft position sensor is of Hall-effect type. It is incorporated in the distributor.

The slotted rotor has only one slot, which indicates when cylinder No. 1 is ready for combustion.

In simple terms, the camshaft position sensor could be likened to a switch in the control module's signal lead which is open or closed according to the position of the slotted rotor.

The sensor receives power from the control module and is grounded together with other sensors.

Using the information from the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors, the control module can calculate when cylinder No. 1 is ready for combustion.

The camshaft position sensor receives power (5 V) from pin 12 of the control module and is grounded at engine grounding point G7S.

The signal is a square wave sent out via pin 2 and received on pin 8 of the control module.

The voltage alternates between zero volts (0 V) when the Hall-effect sensor is open and five volts (5 V) when the sensor is screened.

If the sensor is defective or in the event of a break in the circuit, engine power will drop off slightly and the CHECK ENGINE lamp (MIL) will light up.
