Headlamp alignment

Headlamp alignment

Lateral adjustment

Switch on the headlamps (dipped) and check that the headlamp is correctly adjusted laterally. The zone with the brightest light should be as close to the centre as possible.

For optimum alignment, the tolerance band for the light/dark boundary can be used.

Check both headlamps in the same manner.

Check the spread of the main beams (usually slightly too far to the left) if difficulty is experienced in aligning the headlamps.

Also check that the bulbs are fitted correctly.

Vertical adjustment

Switch on the headlamps (dipped) and check that the headlamp is correctly adjusted vertically. Adjust the height of the beam to the left-hand (LHD cars) or right-hand (RHD cars) horizontal line.

Adjust only that part of the light/dark boundary which is within 0-30 mm to the left (LHD cars) or to the right (RHD cars) of the centre line.

Check both headlamps in the same manner.

Check the spread of the main beams (usually slightly too far to the left) if difficulty is experienced in aligning the headlamps.

Check the following points before carrying out adjustment:

Check the tyre pressures.

Check that the car is weighted with a normal load.

Check that the bulbs are correctly fitted.

Position the car at right angles to the headlamp aligning equipment.

Lateral adjustment

1. The adjusting screw is accessible at the rear of the headlamp.

Vertical adjustment

Manual adjustment

1. Manual adjustment can be done from above by means of the adjusting screw at the rear of the headlamp.

Electric adjustment

Important

The beam-adjustment switch should be set to 0 when adjusting the headlamps.

Carry out vertical adjustment by means of the adjusting knob on the actuator motor, which takes the new setting as the starting point for beam adjustment.

Lateral adjustment (US, CA)

1. Measure the distance between the point scribed on the headlamp lens and the floor. Mark the wall (at 90° to the headlamp lens) with a cross at the same height.

2. Switch on the headlamps (dipped).

3. Turn the adjusting screw until the light is about 1%%of the distance between the car and the wall to the right (LHD cars) or to the left (RDH cars) of the cross on the wall. Example: if the distance between car and wall is 10 metres, the light should be 10 cm to the right (LHD cars) or to the left (RHD cars) of the cross on the wall.

4. The adjusting screw should be at 0 when the headlamp has been adjusted.

If it is not, hold the centre of the screw stationary by means of a screwdriver and turn the adjusting screw to the 0 position.

Important

When fitting a replacement headlamp unit, be sure to carry out vertical adjustment first.

Vertical adjustment (US, CA)

1. Check the following points before carrying out adjustment:

Check the tyre pressures.

Check that the bulbs are correctly fitted.

Check that the car is weighted with a normal load.

Check that the tank is full.

Check that the car is standing on a level surface.

2. Turn the adjusting screw until the bubble is between the two red lines.

Important

When fitting a replacement headlamp unit, be sure to carry out vertical adjustment first.
