Poor shifting performance

Symptom: Poor shifting performance

Poor shifting performance

Fault symptom

Poor shifting performance

Condition

Short-circuit to ground or open circuit in the signal lead between the gear selector position sensor and the TCS.

Diagnostic help

A reading of the Traction Control System's functional status, wheelspin or not, can be obtained with the diagnostics instrument. Select "AUT TRANSMISSION". Select "READ ON/OFF". Select "TCS ACTIVE". Identified wheelspin gives a reading of ON, otherwise OFF.

Diagnostic procedure

1 Check the output signal from the TCS

- Plug a BOB into the transmission control module connector but do not connect the control module,

- Connect the Scan tool diagnostics instrument.

- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

- Select "TCS".

- Select "ACTIVATE".

- Select "TCS LAMP". The TCS indicator lamp can be turned on and off with diagnostics instrument keys F1 and F2 respectively.

- Connect a test lamp to pins 4 and 17. The test lamp should light up at the same time as the TCS indicator lamp.

Does the test lamp work OK?

yes

Inspect the connector visually for moisture, corrosion and pin slide-out. If no relevant cause of the fault can be seen, proceed to point 3.

no

Continue with point 2.

2 Check the lead between the transmission control module and the TCS control module.

Check the continuity of the wiring between pin 4 of the transmission control module and pin 12 of the TCS control module.

Is the wiring OK?

yes

Continue fault diagnosis as described in Service Manual 2:5 "Traction Control System". The continue with point 3.

no

Rectify the fault and continue with point 3.

3 Final check

Warning

WARNING

In order to activate the TCS function the car can be driven onto a lift. Exercise the greatest caution if this method is used. If only the front suspension assembly is raised and supported on stands, the handbrake must always be applied. In such case, make sure that nobody is standing in front of the car or beside the front wheels when this check is carried out. Speed must be kept as low as possible, but at least above 4 km/h.

- Raise the car's front suspension assembly.

- Connect the Scan tool diagnostics instrument.

- Start the engine and run it at idling speed.

- Select "AUT TRANSMISSION".

- Select "READ ON/OFF".

- Select "TCS ACTIVE".

- Rev up the engine in gear position 1 and check that the TCS indicator lamp comes on at the same time as the diagnostics instrument shows that the "TCS ACTIVE" status changes from "OFF" to "ON".

Is the result OK?

yes

The remedial action taken was correct.
