Test driving schedule
Test driving schedule |
This schedule is intended for guidance when carrying out a road test to check complaints about the operation of automatic transmission AF20/22. Note that speed limits must not be exceeded.
Prior to starting the test drive:
Check the fluid level in the gearbox before test driving.Road test
1 Check the starting interlock switch:Try to start the car with the selector lever in the P position or N position. Try to start the car with the selector lever in a position other than P or N .
2 Check the positions of the selector lever:
Make sure that the lever really is in the correct position and does not jump out of the selected position.
3 Check reverse gear:
Reverse the car in the normal manner, checking at the same time that the reversing light comes on.
4 Listen for mechanical noise:
Start in position D . Drive the car so that the transmission is caused to upshift and downshift. Listen for abnormal sounds from the transmission. If you hear anything unusual, cut the test drive short and return to the garage for transmission fault diagnosis. Mechanical faults without a diagnostic trouble code.
5 Check the operation of the transmission while driving:
SPORT mode (S) Downshifting is more rapid. See downshifting speed in the section "Technical Data". WINTER mode (W) Start in position D. The gearbox should start in 3rd gear and the car pull away smoothly. Check that WINTER mode is disengaged at 80 km/h (only applies to non-turbo engine variants without OBD II diagnostics; WINTER mode remains engaged on turbo variants and variants with OBD II diagnostics).
NORMAL mode Start in position D . Check the gearshifting speed with the smallest possible throttle opening. Observe also if the gearshifting slips or is rough. Check that the Lock-up function is available. Lock-up does not work with a throttle opening of less than 4%%. Start in the D position. Depress the accelerator pedal to the kickdown position (100%% throttle valve opening). After the shift from 1st to 2nd gear, release the accelerator pedal slightly to just before the kickdown position (85%% throttle valve opening). Check the gearshifting speed for the relevant engine type. Observe also if the gearshifting slips or is rough. Check that the Lock-up function is available.
DRIVING HINTS Accelerate slowly, lightly depress the brake pedal while maintaining the throttle valve position. Lock-up should disengage if the engine speed is lower than 2000 r/min. Start in the D position. Depress the accelerator pedal to the kickdown position at different vehicle speeds. Check the highest gearshifting speed for a kickdown downshift. With the car stationary on a level surface and the selector lever in the N position, release the brake pedal and depress the throttle slightly. Does the car move at all? Start in position 3 . Drive until 3rd gear is engaged. Release the accelerator pedal and check that engine braking functions on 1st gear. Select 1st gear at high speed and allow the car to decelerate. Check the shifting points during deceleration. Start in position 1 . Accelerate to a suitable speed to check that the engine braking function. Select the P position when the car is parked on a hill and release the brakes. Does the car move?
