Gear lever housing


To remove

Dismantling includes entire gear lever housing with gear rod.


1. Disconnect the battery's negative cable.

2. In order to reach the gear lever housing and the gear rod, the left front seat, the side covers of the middle console and the middle console must be removed. See Workshop Handbook 8:2, Fittings and Fixtures.

3. Remove the air duct.


4. Engage 4th gear.

5. Remove the plastic plug in the gearbox and insert locking pin 87 92 335 with the ring uppermost.

6. Remove from above the clamp which holds the gear rod in the linkage on the gearbox.

7. Engage 3rd gear so that the gear rod and the linkage part company.

8. Remove the screws which hold the gear lever housing, lift up and turn the housing.


9. Remove the two clamps which hold the ignition lock's cables in the gear lever housing.

10. Disconnect the terminal on the ignition lock.

11. Pull backwards and lift out the gear lever housing with gear rod.


Fitting



1. Check that 4th gear is locked with locking pin 87 92 335 (with the ring uppermost) in the gearbox.

2. Place the gear lever housing with gear rod in the car and guide the gear rod into the bulk-head partition inlet.

3. Fit the ignition lock's terminal.

4. Fit the ignition lock's cables with two securing straps in the gear lever housing.


5. Fit the gear lever housing with four screws.

6. Engage 4th gear and insert locking pin 87 92 335 into the gear lever housing. The locking pin's ring should be down in the hole.

7. Tighten from above the nut on the clamp which holds the gear rod in the linkage on the gearbox.

Tightening torque

21 Nm (15.5 lbf ft)

8. Remove the locking pin from the gearbox and refit the plastic plug.


9. Remove the locking pin from the gear lever housing and try changing gear a few times.

10. Fit the air duct.

11. Fit middle console, middle console's side covers and front left seat as described in Workshop Handbook 8:2 Interior equipment.

12. Connect the battery's negative cable.
