Safety-related campaign 10296

Cars in stock must be rectified before delivery. By means of a personal communication, owners of cars already delivered must be informed of the defect and requested to get in touch with their nearest Saab garage as soon as possible so that the fault can be rectified.

Cars concerned

Saab 900 M94 and M95 with a manual gearbox having the following chassis numbers, inclusive:

R2000001-R2047576

S2000001-S2006999

R7010001-R7010050

S7000001-S7011962

Background

On certain cars, difficulty has been experienced in adjusting the gear lever's reverse gear position. As a result, when the gear lever is moved to the reverse position, reverse gear is not engaged. This MI describes a simplified but correct method of adjusting the gear lever. The method consists of two parts, one a preparatory measure (points 1-4) and the other (points 5-13) the actual adjustment procedure. It replaces the method described in Service Manual 4:1 "Manual gearbox", . Please make a note of the different adjustment method in this manual.

Materials

40 87 862 Washer (4)

It is expected that the parts will be in stock by week 17.

Procedure

Before starting work, check box C4 on the modification identity plate. If it is not marked, continue as follows:

1. Remove the gear linkage from the gearbox and gear rod.

2. Remove the circlips at A.

3. Remove the two washers (A) (2 mm) from the linkage and fit the four new ones (B) (1 mm) as shown.

4. Fit the linkage to the gearbox.

Two persons are needed to carry out points 5-13.

This method replaces the method described in Service Manual 4:1 "Manual gearbox", .

Please make a note of the different method of adjustment in this manual.

5. Engage reverse gear and remove the ignition key.

6. Undo the clamp securing the gear rod to the gearbox linkage.

7. Lift up the gear-lever gaiter.

8. Insert a 3 mm feeler gauge between the gear lever and the reverse gear detent.

9. Press the gear lever lightly forwards against the stop and the feeler gauge. Hold the gear lever in this position while carrying out points 10 and 11.

10. Press the entire gear linkage against the gearbox so that reverse gear is positively engaged. Release the linkage.

11. Tighten the clamp securing the gear rod to the linkage.

Tightening torque 21 Nm (15.5 lbf ft)

12. Release the gear lever and remove the feeler gauge.

13. Check that 5th gear can easily be engaged and that the ignition key can be turned to the LOCK position and removed from the ignition switch with the gear lever in reverse.

Is 5th gear easy to engage and can the ignition key be removed when the ignition switch is in the LOCK position and the gear lever in reverse?

Yes - The adjustment is correct.

No - Repeat the whole procedure, but using a feeler gauge that is 0.5 mm thicker (3.5 mm).

Marking of the modification identity plate

After action has been taken, the modification identity plate should be marked in box C4. If modification is carried out by the importer, mark the box with the number "7" and if it is carried out by the dealer, with the number "8".
