Securing shift lever assembly

Background

It is possible that the shift lever ball socket and reverse lock out mechanism on certain 1994 900 5-door models can become dislodged from the shift housing. A retainer clip and pop rivet are now available to correct a complaint when this has occurred. Improvements to the shift housing after the VIN Serial No. limit below have been made so that the addition of this clip and pop rivet are no longer required. Follow the steps outlined below to rectify this situation.

Cars affected:

1994 900 5-door manual transmission models within the following VIN ranges:

Up to -R2013800

Materials:

Retainer clip: 46 25 091

Pop rivet: 79 72 490

Action:

1. Lift up the rubber shift boot, pulling it up around the knob.

2. Inspect the shift ball socket (A) and reverse lock out (B)[see figure] to make certain they are not damaged or broken. Replace as necessary.

3. Make sure A & B are properly assembled.

4. Align the 3 locking lugs at the base of the ball socket (A) with the 3 notches in the aluminum shift housing.

5. Press down on the lip directly above the lugs until the lugs engage the lip in the housing.

6. Install retainer clip (C) over the upper lip of the ball socket as shown in figure. The retainer clip should be located at the 12 o’clock position pointing toward the front of the car.

7. Using the retainer clip as a template, mark the hole location with a center punch.

8. Using a 4.3-4.5mm (11/64”) size drill, drill a hole in the aluminum housing.

Note

Cover the top of the ball socket and dip the end of the drill bit in grease to prevent any metal pieces from entering the shift housing. Vacuum out any chips that may have fallen into the housing.

9. Install pop rivet, P/N 79 72 490.

10. Reassemble the rubber shift boot.

11. Road test the car, verifying proper shift operation.
