MacPherson strut and steering swivel member

The strut consists of a coil spring and interior damper with welded-on spring cup, steering arm mounting and steering swivel member.
The damper of gas-filled twin-tube type is not integral with the strut and can be replaced separately. The damper is secured in the spring base mounting.
To give the damper piston a long service life, it is well- protected against dirt and moisture by a rubber gaiter. The end-travel stop and rubber gaiter form a single unit.

The steering swivel member is the main component in the wheel bearing assembly and consists of a bearing housing, which is integrated with the strut, and a ball joint mounting.
The bearing is of double-row angular-contact type. It is pressed into the steering swivel member and secured by means of two locking rings on the outboard side of the bearing.
The steering radius is negative, that is to say an imaginary line drawn through the swivel axis meets the ground outside the centre line of the wheel.
