1.

Slacken the hub centre-nut
slightly when all four wheels of the car
are on the ground.
|
2.
|
Raise the car. Unscrew the five wheel bolts and lift off the wheel.
|
3.
|
Unscrew the hub centre-nut fully, remove the wheel sensor.
|
4.
|
Press back the brake piston, using a pair of slip-
joint pliers.
Remove the caliper from the steering-swivel member
and suspend it in the wheel housing by means of a cable tie.
|
5.
|
Remove the brake disc and back plate.
|
6.
|
Slacken the tie-rod end nut slightly.
Press out the tie-rod end bolt, using a puller (part No. 89 96 696).
Undo the nut and lift the tie-rod end bolt out of the
hole.

7.
|
Unscrew the nut securing the anti-roll bar to the swinging arm.
|
8.
|
Undo the nut on the outer ball joint. Fit a puller (part No. 89 96 696)
on the spring link and press the ball joint out of the steering swivel
member.
Unscrew the nut and discard it. This nut is of self-locking type and must not be reused.

9.
|
Remove the three nuts on the upper mounting for the MacPherson
strut.

|
Lift away the MacPherson strut.

|
Clamp the MacPherson strut in
a vice.
Compress the spring, using tool
88 18 791 and holder 88 18 809.
|
2.
|
Grip the piston rod and remove the nut, using special tool 89 96 662.
This nut is of self-locking type and must not be reused.
|
3.
|
Remove the mounting and top spring seat.
|
4.
|
Remove the coil spring, gaiter and compression stop.
|
5.
|
Unscrew the damper, using special tool 89 96 670.
|
6.
|
Lift the damper out of the strut.
|

|
Inspect the gaiter and bushes
for damage.
|
2.
|
Screw the damper in place, using special tool 89 96 670.
Tightening torque: 215 Nm (158.7 lbf ft)
|
3.
|
Fit the coil spring in place. The lower end of the spring should abut
against the stop in the bottom spring cup.
|
4.
|
Fit the upper spring seat (with the protruding lug positioned as shown) and
the mounting in place. Make sure that the lower washer is fitted the right way round (with the
part No. facing downwards). Grip the piston rod and tighten the nut, using special tool 89 96
662.
Undo the spring press (part Nos. 88 18 791 and
88 18 809).

Position the MacPherson strut
on the car and fit the three retaining
nuts on the top mounting.
Tighten the nuts alternately.
Tightening torque: 18 Nm (13.3 lbf ft)

|
Tighten the nut securing the ball joint.
Tightening torque: 75 Nm (55.4 lbf ft)
|
3.
|
Tighten the nut securing the anti-roll bar to the spring link.
Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.4 lbf ft)

4.
|
Refit the back plate and the brake disc.
|
5.
|
Check that the brake piston is pressed back into the cylinder. Fit the
brake caliper to the steering swivel member.
|
6.
|
Refit the wheel sensor.
|
7.
|
Tighten the hub centre-nut slightly.
Important
|
Always fit a new nut if the hub centre-nut has been slackened or
removed as it is of self-locking type and should not be reused.
|
|
|
8.
|
Fit the wheel and tighten the five wheel bolts.
Tightening torques:
105-130 Nm (78-96 lbf ft) light alloy wheel
90-105 Nm (67-78 lbf ft) pressed steel wheel
|
9.
|
Lower the car and tighten the hub centre-nut when all four wheels are
on the ground.
Tightening torque: 290 Nm (214 lbf ft)
|
10.
|
Tighten the upper mounting nut.
Tightening torque: 90 Nm (66.4 lbf ft)
|
11.
|
Depress the brake pedal to activate the pistons in the brake caliper.
