Intermediate shaft bearing: V6 engine


To remove


1. Raise the car and remove the right-hand front wheel. Wipe clean the area where the intermediate shaft enters the gearbox.

2. Remove the ball joint nut.

3. Remove the anti-roll bar mounting.

4. Separate the ball joint from the steering swivel member.

Use special tool 89 96 696. Press down the spring link and remove the ball joint.

5. Use special tool 89 96 654 to remove the drive shaft from the intermediate shaft.


6. Remove the intermediate shaft bearing and bolt.

Important

Place a receptacle under the gearbox to collect the oil that will run out.


7. Pull the intermediate shaft out of the gearbox.

8. Remove the O-ring.


9. Press off the bearing bracket, using puller 87 91 287.

10. Remove the circlip securing the support bearing to the intermediate shaft.

11. Press the bearing off the intermediate shaft, using puller 87 91 287.


To fit



1. Press the new bearing down into the bearing bracket.

2. Carefully press the bearing and the bearing bracket down onto the intermediate shaft.

Use sleeve 78 41 067.

3. Fit the circlip and sealing ring.

Make sure that the circlip is fitted the right way round.

4. Position the intermediate shaft and screw the intermediate shaft bearing in place.


5. Fit the inner driver onto the intermediate shaft.

6. Carefully tap the driver into position by striking the constant-velocity joint with a rubber mallet, exercising care.

7. Press the spring link down and press the ball joint into place.

8. Tighten the ball joint retaining nut (1).

Tightening torque: 75 Nm (55.4 lbf ft).

9. Fit the anti-roll bar and tighten the retaining nut (2).

Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.4 lbf ft).

10. Fit the wheel and lower the car to the floor.

11. Top up with fresh gearbox oil.
