All 1994 and later Saab 900 models are equipped with an airbag on the
driver's side. All cars with a US specification are also equipped with an airbag on the
passenger's side. In certain markets the passenger airbag is available as a factory-
fitted option.

The airbag system supplements the car's seat belts and
substantially improves the level of protection in the event of a serious head-on collision. In a
collision which corresponds to driving at a speed above 25 km/h into a barrier, the airbags are
inflated and, together with the seat belts, prevent the driver and front-seat passenger from
hitting the steering wheel, dashboard and windscreen.
The airbag on the driver's side is mounted in the centre of the steering wheel
while the airbag on the passenger's side is located above the glove box. The entire
system is controlled by a control module located on the tunnel behind the centre console. The
control module senses when a collision occurs and sends an electrical pulse to the electric
detonators which inflate the airbags. The control module continuously tests the airbag system
and stores any diagnostic trouble codes that may be generated.
To prevent the driver or passenger sliding in under the facia during a collision, there are
knee shields under the facia.
In addition, the seat belts for the front seats are equipped with mechanical seat-belt
tensioners which tighten the belts in the event of a collision.
