Scrapping cars with airbag

Scrapping cars with airbag

To avoid injury when scrapping cars fitted with airbags, all airbags that have not been triggered must be rendered unserviceable by electric detonation as described below before the car is scrapped.

Warning

The airbag to be detonated must be correctly fitted in the car. Check that there are no loose objects in the vicinity of the airbag.

Trigger the airbag using a detonating device, part No. 84 71 104, and wiring harness, part No. 86 11 477 for the steering wheel airbag (A) and part No. 86 11 469 for the passenger airbag (B). The detonating device consists of an approximately 15 metre long cable with pushbutton, battery clamps and connectors for plugging into the wiring harnesses.

The battery to which the triggering device is connected must be in good condition.

1. The car must be parked outdoors. The safety distance from the car is ten metres. No persons or objects should be present within the safety distance.

2. Make sure that nobody is in the car and that there are no loose objects in the front seat or on the facia.

3. Disconnect the battery's negative cable.

4. Steering wheel centre pad (airbag module):

4.a. Remove the lower steering column cover.

4.b. Unplug the orange two-pin connector. Connect the detonating device's connector to wiring harness 86 11 477 (A). Connect the wiring harness to the orange connector.

5. Passenger airbag:

5.a. Remove the glove box. See section 853 in Service Manual 8:2 "Interior equipment".

5.b. Unplug the connector at the back of the airbag. Connect the detonating device's connector to wiring harness 86 11 469 (B). Connect the wiring harness to the airbag.

6. Run the lead through the door opening and close the door. Check that all doors and windows are closed.

7. Position a battery ten meters from the car. Connect the triggering device to the battery. Check that there are no persons within the ten meter safety distance from the car.

8. Detonate the airbag by pressing the triggering button. When the airbag detonates, the sound of an explosion will be heard and white smoke will be visible inside the car.

9. Disconnect the detonating device's cables from the battery as soon as the airbag has been triggered. Wait for 30 minutes before continuing work on the car to allow the airbag's gas generator to cool down.

Warning

If the airbag is not triggered at the first attempt, disconnect the detonating device from the battery and carefully inspect the cables.
