Bad smell from air conditioning system.

Cars concerned

Saab 9000 and Saab 900 with A/C or ACC.

Background

During certain weather conditions the climate control system can give off a bad smell when the car is started. The following method of surface treatment for the evaporator prevents this smell arising.

Materials

300 23 59 Equipment kit

Nozzle

Nozzle extension

Adapter

The above material can be reused.

1 bottle 120 ml Saab Odour Remover A/C

Saab Odour Remover A/C can be ordered separately as part number:

300 23 67 1 bottle 120 ml Saab Odour Remover A/C

Diagnostic procedure

To apply the Saab Odour Remover correctly, follow the instructions carefully. If they are not followed carefully there is a great risk that the surface treatment will rinse off and have no effect.

The treatment takes approx. two hours but the real working time is only about 30 minutes. The rest of the time is spent drying the evaporator and surface treatment agent.

If the surface treatment agent does not get enough time to dry it will be rinsed off within two weeks.

Inspection before treatment

In the event of small leaks from the heater bad smells can arise. It is therefore important to check the heater for leaks.

Air pollution increases the risk of bad smells arising. It is therefore important that the fresh-air filter is in place and that it is replaced as stated in the service program.

Check the drain hose from the heating and ventilation unit to make sure it is not bent and that the condensation can pass freely.

Treatment Saab 9000

1. Remove the cover over the bulkhead.

2. Remove the ventilation fan cover and remove the filter.

3. Check for dirt, leaves etc. in the filter or in the filter space in the evaporator. Vacuum clean the filter and filter space in the evaporator.

4. Fit the cover over the filter space but do not refit the filter.

5. Unplug the 1-pin connector on the compressor so that it cannot start

6. Start the engine.

7. Open the front and rear side windows approx. 15 mm.

8. When the engine reaches normal operating temperature, set the temperature control on max (ACC HI) and the fan speed on max . Set the air distribution in the ventilation position and select the recirculation position.

9.

10. Shake the Saab Odour Remover bottle well. Connect the adapter to the nozzle and the Odour Remover bottle. Connect the nozzle extension to the spray gun.

Important

Adjust the air pressure to 6-8 bar (85-120 psi)

11. Disengage the recirculation position and turn off the engine. Remove the cover over the filter space and run the nozzle down to the bottom of the evaporator with the hole from the nozzle extension pointing towards the evaporator.

12. Run the nozzle down with a smooth movement inside the evaporator casing and spray half of the Saab Odour Remover bottle on the evaporator fins.

13. Fit the cover over the space for the fresh-air filter. Set the temperature control on max (ACC HI) and start the ventilation fan, letting it run at max speed for 10 seconds. Turn off the fan.

14. Remove the cover over the filter space and spray the remains of the Saab Odour Remover over the evaporator.

15. Fit the cover over the filter space. Set the fan speed on max and choose the recirculation position. Let the fan run for 10 seconds allowing the entire evaporator to be covered in the Saab Odour Remover.

16. Allow the car to stand for 30 minutes.

17. Start the engine. Select the recirculation position, full heat, distribution position ventilation and full fan speed with the side windows open.

18. Allow the engine to idle for one hour, so that the Saab Odour Remover fastens properly.

19. Connect the 1-pin compressor connector. Refit the fresh-air filter, fresh air filter cover and the cover over the bulkhead.

Treatment Saab 900

1. Remove the wiper arms and the cover over the bulkhead.

2. Remove the fresh air filter.

3. Check for dirt, leaves etc. in the filter. Vacuum clean the filter or replace it with a new filter.

4. Unplug the 1-pin connector on the compressor so that it cannot start.

5. Start the engine.

6. Open the front and rear side windows approx. 15 mm.

7. When the engine reaches normal operating temperature, set the temperature control on max (ACC HI) and the fan speed on max . Set the air distribution in the ventilation position and select the recirculation position.

8.

9. Shake the Saab Odour Remover bottle well. Connect the adapter to the nozzle and Odour Remover bottle. Cover the four upper holes on the nozzle extension and connect it to the spray gun.

Important

Adjust the air pressure to 6-8 bar (85-120 psi)

10. Disconnect the recirculation position.

11. Set the ventilation fan at half speed and spray Saab Odour Remover into the rotating fan. Spray in “puffs” for 2-3 second intervals and empty the whole bottle.

12. Allow the car to stand for 30 minutes.

13. Start the engine. Set the temperature control at max (ACC HI) and the fan speed at max. Set the air distribution in the ventilation position and select the recirculation position. Allow the side windows to be half open.

14. Allow the engine to idle for one hour, so that the Saab Odour Remover fastens properly.

15. Connect the 1-pin compressor connector. Refit the fresh-air filter.

16. Fit the cover over the bulkhead and fit the wiper arms.
