SAE J1930 Terminology

SAE J1930 Terminology

Starting with model year 1994, the terminology used to describe all emission-related components, signals and functions is somewhat different to that previously used. This new terminology conforms to the Society of Automotive Engineers Recommended Practice SAE J1930. The use of J1930 terminology for emission-related systems and components is required by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for all service literature beginning with the 1993 model year (see Service Manual 2:7 TRIONIC for the M93 Saab 9000 as an example). The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has also proposed regulations requiring the use of J1930 terminology beginning in model year 1994. This change in terminology may be troublesome to begin with for technicians long accustomed to Saab component and system names. However, standardization in the automotive industry will in time reduce the confusion and misunderstanding that can result from using different terms for the same component. For example, what Saab calls an AIC (Automatic Idle Control) valve is termed an "Electronic Air Control Valve Solenoid", "Auxiliary Air Control Valve", "Idle Stabilizer Valve" or "Air Control Valve" by other manufacturers. Starting with model year 1994, we use the term IAC (Idle Air Control) valve in conformity with J1930 and this is the term that will be used by all other motor manufacturers throughout the world.

The SAE J1930 terms were not selected on the basis of what component names were most commonly used by the majority of motor manufacturers. Instead, the SAE used a logical method for describing components in which modifiers are added to a base word in order of decreasing significance. Let us return to " Idle Air Control Valve " as an example:

The base word is valve .

What kind of valve? A control valve.

What does it control? Air.

What kind of air? Idle air.

In order to assist technicians who are familiar with Saab terminology, there is a listing on the next page comparing previous Saab component and system terms with the equivalent J1930 terminology. Some of the terms in the listing might not be used in this particular Service Manual but you will no doubt come across them sooner or later in other connections. Since SAE J1930 is a local market requirement, changes in the terminology will naturally affect other markets to a lesser extent. Despite this, we believe it is important for you to be aware of these changes no matter where in the world you happen to be. If for no other reason, so that you can consult the following listing if and when you encounter a term that seems strange.

The listing below shows the difference between previous Saab terms and the new J1930 terminology. The terms used in each comparison purposes, making it is possible to predict the direct affect of J1930 on terminology, irrespective of the language.
