Replacing the springs in the legroom adjustment mechanism, manual seats

Cars concerned

All Saab 900 Coupé (3D) with manual seats in the following VIN interval: R2030004 - R2043093

Background

There may exist a risk that the front seats will not lock properly after being adjusted lengthways due to the springs in the legroom adjustment mechanism being bent incorrectly. To eliminate this risk the springs in the legroom adjustment mechanism should be replaced on the cars concerned.

Materials

Spring kit, part no. 46 54 158. The kit contains four springs, two for each seat.

Diagnostic procedure

Check the modification identity plate first. If it is not stamped in the box A1, the measures described in this SI must be carried out on the car.

1. Remove the seat as described in the Service Manual 0 News M1995.

Warning

The seat must be set in the front position when the seat is lifted from the car. Otherwise, there is a great risk for injury. If contact is made with the legroom adjustment handle, the seat rail is forced backwards with great force.

2. Unhook the springs from the legroom adjustment handle.

3. Remove the springs from the seat chassis using a screwdriver. Discard the removed springs.

4. Fit the new springs in place as follows:

4.a. The curved bend on the spring must be placed in the groove on the seat chassis.

4.b. The U-bend on the spring must be tensioned in the groove on the seat chassis. Tap lightly on the spring at the U-bend to ensure that it is securely fastened.

4.c. Hook the ends of the springs into the notch on the legroom adjustment handle.

5. Fit the seat in the car and check the function. See Service Manual 0 News M1995.

Marking the modification identity plate

When these measures have been carried out, the modification identity plate should be marked in the "A1" box with the number "7" if the measures have been carried out by the importer and with number "8" if carried out by the dealer.
