Background

A squeaking noise may occur in the front seat backrests. The noise is caused by the backrest foam cushion rubbing against a rubber moulding.

Materials


Petroleum jelly, Shell 8401 (In the USA Shell Compound S 6800) or similar.

Gloves

Fitting kit for upholstery, part no. 84 71 062 (if necessary). The kit contains pliers and 100 staples


Diagnostic procedure


1. Adjust the backrest as far forward as possible.


2. Remove the five staples securing the upholstery to the lower edge at the rear of the backrest.

3. Put on a gloves, lubricate it with petroleum jelly and run your hand under the upholstery as shown in the illustration.


Warning

Work with care. There may be sharp edges on the backrest frame and springs.


4. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly along the entire length of the rubber moulding not forgetting the corners.


Important

The entire rubber moulding must be lubricated with petroleum jelly if the noise is to disappear.


5. Refit the upholstery and secure it on the lower edge with five staples. See service manual 8:2 Interior equipment . Use the staples included in fitting kit part no. 86 71 062 or order the staples separately, part no. 94 50 685.


6. Check that the sharp edges on the staples are not protruding or there will be risk of injuring passengers or damaging the upholstery.


Marking the modification identity plate

The modification identity plate should be marked with number "7" in box A3 if the measures have been carried out by the importer and with number "8" if they have been carried out by a dealer.
