Handling of ECMs

Handling of ECMs

All ECMs are more or less sensitive to electrostatic discharges and if they are handled incorrectly may be damaged so severely that they cease to work. It is important therefore for the following rules to be complied with whenever the ECM for any reason has to be removed or replaced.

Avoid disconnecting or removing the ECM unless this is absolutely necessary

Never touch the connector pins and never position the ECM so that the pins come into contact with foreign objects

Before unpacking a new ECM, ground the packaging against the body of the car and open the pack as short a time as possible before fitting

When working with ECMs, it is important that you ground yourself at regular intervals. This is particularly important when you have been sitting in the car, when you have changed position or moved around the car and under climatic conditions in which the air is very dry (e.g. during winter in countries with a cold climate).

Avoid wearing clothes made of synthetic material

Avoid wearing shoes with insulated rubber soles

ECMs suspected of being faulty should also always be handled in the same way. This greatly increases the chances of locating the cause of the fault.
