To remove |
1. |
Use a brake clamp to hold the
brake pedal in the depressed position.
|

Raise the car and remove the wheels.
|
3. |
Unplug the speed sensor connectors and disconnect the cables from the
spring link.
|
4. |
Remove the return springs from the levers on both sides.
|
5. |
Remove the left-hand handbrake cable from the lever and holder and
equalizing sleeve.
|
6. |
Remove the right-hand handbrake cable from the lever and holder.
|
7. |
Remove the rear silencer (1).
|
8. |
Remove the rear anti-roll bar. Collect the nut washers.
|
9. |
Remove the left-hand and right-hand rear brake pipes. Plug the brake
calipers and hose connections (2)
|
10. |
Remove the retaining clips for the brake hose connections and press them out of
the holder.
|
11. |
Use a high-lift jack or the like to press up the spring link on one side
slightly.
|
12. |
Remove the damper's lower retaining bolt (3).
|
13. |
Remove the high/lift jack.
|
14. |
Using a crowbar, carefully force the spring link down and remove the
coil spring and spacer.
|
15. |
Remove the four hub assembly retaining nuts (4) and lift off the hub assembly
and spacer.
|
16. |
Place a jack or the like under the spring link on the other side of the
car.
|
17. |
Press up the spring link slightly.
|
18. |
Remove the damper's lower retaining bolt (3).
|
19. |
Carefully release and lower the spring link. Remove the coil spring and
spacer.
|
20. |
Remove the four hub assembly retaining nuts (4) and lift off the hub assembly
and spacer.
|
21. |
Position the jack under the rear axle.
|
22. |
Remove the rear axle retaining bolts (5). Lower the rear axle.
|
23. |
Place the rear axle on a workbench. Remove the inner anti-roll bar and
bush.
|
24. |
Remove the brake hose and brake cable holder.
|
To fit |
1. |
Fit new bushes
(1).
|
2. |
Fit the brake hose and brake cable holder.
|
3. |
Fit the inner anti-roll bar with rubber bush (2).
Tightening torques: 60 Nm +(60°-75°) (44.3 lbf ft +(60°-75°)) Fit the hub assembly on both sides. Tighten the nuts.
Tightening torques: 50 Nm +30° +15° (36.9 lbf ft). |

Remove the bolt for the tie-down bracket.

5. |
Place the rear axle on a high-lift jack or the like.
|
6. |
Raise the rear axle, offering it up to the body mountings.
Fit the retaining bolts and nuts but do not tighten them.
|
7. |
Place the jack or similar under the spring link and raise it to the
correct distance between the edge of the wheel arch and the upper edge
of the hub centre. This distance should be about 37 cm. Tighten the
retaining bolts to the correct torque.
Tightening torque: 65 Nm (48 lbf ft) |
8. |
Tighten the bolt for the tie-down bracket.
Tightening torque: 24 Nm (17.7 lbf ft) |
9. |
Fit the coil spring and spacer.

10. |
Press the spring link up additionally and fit the damper's lower
retaining bolt (3). Tighten the bolt.
Tightening torque: 62 Nm (45.8 lbf ft) |
11. |
Move the jack or similar to the other side of the car.
Press up the spring link and tighten the bolt securing it to the rear
axle.
Tightening torque: 65 Nm (48 lbf ft) |

Position the coil spring and spacer on the other side. Use a crowbar to
press down the spring link.

Fit the damper's lower retaining bolt |I7. Tighten the bolt.
Tightening torque: 62 Nm (45.8 lbf ft) Remove the high/lift jack. |
14. |
Fit the hose connections in the holders and fit the retaining
clips.
|
15. |
Fit the nut washers and mount the rear anti-roll bar. Tighten the
bolts.
Tightening torque: 24 Nm (17.7 lbf ft) |

Remove the plugs from the brake pipe connections and fit the brake
pipes on both sides (4).
|

Fix the cables to the spring link and plug in the speed sensor
connectors on both sides.
|
18. |
Fit the right-hand brake cable to the holder and lever.
|
19. |
Fit the left-hand handbrake cable to the equalizing sleeve, lever and
holders.
|
20. |
Fit the return springs on both sides.
|
21. |
Fit the rear silencer (5).
|
22. |
Lower the car slightly.
Remove the brake clamp.
|
23. |
Bleed the brake system (see Service Manual 5 "Brakes").
|
24. |
Fit the wheels and lower the car to the floor.
|
Bush, rear axle |
To remove
1. |
Depress the brake pedal by
means of a brake clamp.
|
2. |
Raise the car slightly and remove the wheels. Then raise the car
fully.
|
3. |
Remove the rear silencer (only when changing the bush on the right-hand
side).
|
4. |
Remove the brake pipes from the hose connections on the rear axle. Plug
the brake pipes.
|
5. |
Place a high-lift jack or the like under the spring link.
|
6. |
Remove the damper's lower retaining bolt.
|
7. |
Lower the spring link and remove the jack.
|
8. |
Place a crowbar or the like in the damper mounting bracket and
carefully lever the spring link downwards. Remove the coil spring.
|
9. |
Position the jack or similar under the rear axle.
|
10. |
Remove the rear axle retaining bolt. Carefully lower the rear axle.
|
11. |
Use a knife or chisel to remove the edge of the bush where the special
tool is to be positioned.
|
12. |
Position special tool 89 96 688 as shown and remove the
bush.
|
To fit |
1. |
Fit the new bush, using the special tool (part No.
89 96 688). The openings in the bush should be fitted so that they are positioned 9°
5° upwards relative to the link arms' weld.
|
2. |
Remove the retaining bolt for the tie-down bracket.
|
3. |
Offer up the rear axle to the mounting on the body. Fit the retaining
bolt but do not tighten it.
|
4. |
Place the jack or similar under the rear spring link and raise it to
the correct distance between the edge of the wheel arch and the upper
edge of the hub centre. This distance should be about 37 cm. Tighten to
the correct torque.
Tightening torque: 65 Nm (48 lbf ft). |
5. |
Tighten the retaining bolt for the tie-down bracket.
Tightening torque: 24 Nm (17.7 lbf ft). |
6. |
Press the spring link down and position the coil spring.

Place a high-lift jack or the like under the spring link. Raise the
jack and fit the damper's lower retaining bolt. Tighten the bolt.
Tightening torque: 62 Nm (45.8 lbf ft) |
8. |
Place the brake hose in the bracket and fit the brake pipes and
clips.

9. |
Fit the rear silencer.
|
10. |
Lower the car slightly and remove the brake clamp.
|
11. |
Bleed the brake system. See Service Manual 5 "Brakes".
|
12. |
Fit the wheels and lower the car to the floor.
