Handling control modules

Handling control modules

All control modules are more or less sensitive to static electricity and could, if handled incorrectly, be so seriously damaged that they would be unserviceable. It is therefore imperative for the following rules to be followed at all times when a control module has to be removed or changed for any reason.

Avoid disconnecting or removing the control module unless absolutely necessary.

Never touch the connecting pins and never place the control module so that the pins come into contact with foreign objects.

Before unpacking a new control module, ground the packaging to the car body. Open the packaging as shortly as possible before fitting the control module in place.

When doing any work involving a control module, it is important to ground yourself as regular intervals. This is especially important when you have been sitting in the car, changed position or moved round the car and it is extremely important when the air is very dry (such as in the winter and in countries with a cold climate).

Avoid wearing clothes made of synthetic (man-made) fibres.

In addition, always handle control modules that are suspected of being defective in a similar manner. This will greatly increase your chances of finding the cause of the fault.
