B1605

Internal Fault

Fault symptoms

TOP CYCLE ERROR displayed on SID. The soft top cannot be operated. This diagnostic trouble code can be generated without noticeable symptoms.

Conditions

The reference voltage to the microswitches is short-circuited. Defective internal control module components.

Diagnostic help

Rectify any other diagnostic trouble codes first.

Operate the soft top with the ROOF button for a few cycles and make sure no trouble codes are generated.

The microswitch function can be read on the diagnostic tool.

- Connect the diagnostic tool.

- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

- Read the value for a microswitch.

If this trouble code has been generated, all the microswitches will show an incorrect reference voltage.

If only B1605 has been generated and there are no other symptoms, the trouble code can be cleared and no further action is required.

Checking the wiring

Intermittent faults can occur during temporary short circuits and open circuits. Jiggle the wiring harness in several places and in various directions to detect problems in the wiring harness and connectors. Watch the multimeter, diagnostic tool and test lamp during the check.

Diagnostic procedure

1. Check for other trouble codes

- Connect the diagnostic tool.

- See whether other trouble codes have been stored in the control module.

Are there any other trouble codes stored in the control module?

yes

Rectify as described in the relevant diagnostic procedure.

no

Continue with step 2.

2. Check the wiring

- Check the wiring between control module pin 22 (K42) and pin 23 (K42), as well as the wiring from the microswitches to respective control module input pins 27, 40, 24, 39, 25, 38, 26, 41 (K42) for shorts to ground or B+.

Is the wiring free from faults?

yes

Continue with step 3.

no

Repair or replace the lead in question and proceed to step 4.

3. Check the control module connections and power supply

- Remove the control module and check its connectors for damage, oxidation and loose sleeves.

- Unplug control module connectors K20 and K42.

- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

- Take a voltage readings with a multimeter in the connectors as follows:

pin 20 (K20) and ground..................B+

pin 10 (K20) and B+......................B+

pin 18 (K42) and B+......................B+

Are connectors and the power supply free from faults?

yes

Continue with step 4.

no

Rectify the fault in question and continue with step 4.

4. Final check

- Clear the diagnostic trouble codes.

- Activate the soft top with the ROOF button and operate it for a few cycles

- Make sure the soft top is functioning correctly and that no diagnostic trouble codes are generated.

Has the diagnostic trouble code recurred?

yes

Change the control module as described in

no

The fault has been rectified.
