Is the drive link for second bow defective or is the cloth stuck to the second bow?

A.1.

Carry out MI 811-1663 if it has not been done previously. This problem can arise if the second bow is not returned, as it will then knock on the front side rails and bend the balance link. It can be re-aligned in the car if it is only slightly bent.

If the balance link is bent, the guide arms on both sides should also be checked to see if they are also bent.

Is the main motor or fifth bow potentiometer defective?

Check the ’’Main Motor Potentiometer” and the ’’5th Bow Potentiometer” with Tech 2 and the graphical function at the same time as you fully raise and lower the soft top. Be observant of any irregularities in the graphical display of the ’’Main Motor Potentiometer” and the ’’5th Bow Potentiometer” at the points where the soft top stops. If the diagram contains large ’’spikes” the potentiometer is shorted, or the connections are poor.
It is possible that Tech 2 does not indicate that the potentiometer is making bad contact. A digital multimeter or oscilloscope can also be used to measure the output voltage of the potentiometer. The voltage from the main potentiometer can be read between pins 29 and 30 on connector K42 on the TSAS control module. The voltage from the 5th bow potentiometer can be read between pins 29 and 31 on connector K42 on the TSAS control module.
