Checking window lifts, soft top

Fault symptoms

One or more window lifts or the soft top cannot be operated.

Warning

The normal control module safety functions are disconnected when the soft top mechanism is operated with the diagnostic tool. The motors continue to run as long as the diagnostic tool activates them, irrespective of the position of the soft top, fifth bow or soft top cover. Use caution and always lower the rear seat backrest.

Diagnostic help

Check maxi fuse 5 and fuse 7 and that they are being supplied with current. The status of the switches can be read and the motors activated with the diagnostic tool.

- Connect the diagnostic tool.

- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

- Read the status of the window switches while activating them.

If the function is correct, the diagnostic tool should display:

OFF

UP

DOWN

If the correct values are displayed on the diagnostic tool, continue fault diagnosis with DTC 2471, for example. The motor should move when activated.

Switch 386 is supplied with +54 via fuse 7 and crimp connector J65. The unit is grounded to grounding point G14 via crimp connector J147. Check these leads.

Trouble code B1520 will be generated if there is an open circuit in the +30 supply to the control module. If any of the window lifts is activated, trouble code B2471, B2472, B2473 or B2474 will be generated.

Checking the wiring

Intermittent faults can occur during temporary short circuits and open circuits. Jiggle the wiring harness in several places and in various directions to detect problems in the wiring harness and connectors. Watch the multimeter, diagnostic tool and test lamp during the check.

Diagnostic procedure

1. Check the voltage supply to the switch unit

- Unplug the switch unit.

- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

- Connect the test lamp as follows:

between pin 10 and ground

between pin 11 and ground

between pin 16 and ground

between pin 8 and B+

between pin 12 and B+

The test lamp should light up.

Does the test lamp light up?

yes

Continue with step 2.

no

Check and if necessary rectify the relevant lead and fuse 7.

2. Check the control module input

- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

- Connect a jumper lead in the switch unit connector as follows:

FRONT RIGHT between pins 7 and 10 - window UP between pins 6 and 10 - window DOWN

ALL FOUR WINDOWS between pins 17 and 10 - windows UP between pins 15 and 10 - windows DOWN

SOFT TOP between pins 3 and 10 - soft top UP between pins 4 and 10 - soft top DOWN

Is the function correct?

yes

Change the switch unit. Continue with step 3.
