Replacement of bonnet-release cable and
release lever

Note
|
To facilitate the installation of a new bonnet-release cable, a
pull-through wire can be fitted by means of the old cable when it is
removed.
|
1.
|
Open the bonnet and release
the sheathing for the bonnet-release
cable by removing the clamp.
Note
|
To open the bonnet in an emergency or if the bonnet-release
mechanism is broken, use special tool 8292963.
|
|
2.
|
Detach the bonnet-release cable from the bonnet lock by first unfastening the
bonnet lock spring and then removing the cable from the spring.
|
3.
|
Withdraw the bonnet-release cable from the radiator cross- member to
the bulkhead partition.
|
4.
|
Open the driver's door.
|
5.
|
Remove the ICE module from under the knee shield on the driver's side,
as follows:
|
|

|
Lift away the fuse-holder cover.
|
|
•
|
Remove the lower section of the instrument panel on the driver's
side.
|
|
•
|
Remove the floor ventilation duct secured by a screw in the bottom of
the fuse holder.
|
|
•
|
Remove the ICE module and relay holder by removing the plastic nut
securing the relay-holder bracket and the two relay-holder retaining
screws.

Remove the two screws securing the fuse holder and bend it
aside.
|
7.
|
Fold down the front of the carpet.
|
8.
|
Remove the release lever assembly by prising open the locking tabs with
two screwdrivers, one from above and one from below, and withdraw the
assembly rearwards and outwards.

9.
|
Withdraw the bonnet-release cable and release lever assembly (as a single unit)
through the bulkhead partition.

Note
|
Fitting a new bonnet-release cable will be facilitated by means of a pull-through
consisting of thin steel wire with a loop at the end which is either pushed through the bulkhead
partition by hand or pulled through the it with the old bonnet-release cable that is to be
replaced.

|
Pull the pull-through wire
through the bulkhead partition and hook
the new bonnet-release cable to the loop in the end.
Note
|
Wrap insulating tape round the joint and lubricate the cable with
petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to facilitate its passage.
|
|
2.
|
Pull the bonnet-release cable through the bulkhead partition. Push
the cable to ease it along at the same time as you pull it.
|
3.
|
Press the release-lever assembly into place.
|
4.
|
Fit the fuse holder by means of the two retaining bolts.
|
5.
|
Fit the ICE module as follows:
|
|
•
|
Fit the ICE module and the relay holder.
|
|
•
|
Fit the air distribution ducting.
|
|
•
|
Fit the lower section of the instrument panel.
|
6.
|
Pull the bonnet-release cable to the radiator cross-member via the lead-
through in the bottom of the washer fluid reservoir filler opening.

7.
|
Feed the bonnet-release cable through the clamp and into the bonnet
lock.
|
8.
|
Tension the bonnet lock.
|
9.
|
Tension the bonnet-release cable and tighten the clamp.
|
10.
|
If necessary, lubricate the bonnet lock spring and striker pin
socket.
|
11.
|
Check the operation of the bonnet-release mechanism.
