Pitting on cylinder block sealing surface to cylinder head
All 4-cylinder engine models
Under certain conditions, the surface sealing the cylinder block to the cylinder head can become pitted due to prolonged leaks in the cylinder head gasket. The pitting arises in the area around the engine coolant passageways.
This Service Information describes the measures to be taken if pitting is detected.
(16) 30 31 259 Repair compound
1.
Remove the cylinder head and the cylinder head gasket, see “2. Basic Engine, Adjustment/Replacement, Removing the cylinder head”.
Varning
Make sure the repair compound or grindings do not enter cylinders or coolant and oil passageways.
Seal off the oil and coolant passageways and the cylinders.
2.
Clean the surface thoroughly. For maximum adhesion the surface should be roughened slightly with course abrasive paper.
3.
Wear rubber gloves to protect hands.
Warning
Always wear protective gloves when working with chemicals.
Cut off the required length of repair compound and remove the plastic casing.
4.
Knead the repair compound with your fingers until it has acquired and even colour.
5.
Press the repair compound onto the point of repair within 2 minutes.
Make sure the compound is applied evenly and that it protrudes above the machined surface of the cylinder block. To obtain as level a surface as possible, excess repair compound can be wiped off with a wet rag.
6.
Let the compound harden through (1-2 hours) and then smooth off the area with a grinding block so that the surface of the cylinder block is level and smooth. Make sure that no metal is removed from the surface of the cylinder block.
7.
Fit the cylinder head and gasket, see “2. Basic Engine, Adjustment/Replacement, Fitting the cylinder head”.
