Principle of operation, torque reduction (automatic transmission)

In connection with upshifting and downshifting, the control module receives signals on pin 51 from pin 13 of the automatic transmission.

Depending on the engine load and rpm, the voltage applied to pin 51 from B+ will drop to zero volts (0 V) in an extremely short time (maximum 250 ms). When the control module receives this information, it retards the ignition to reduce engine torque.

Under maximum engine load the ignition may be retarded to 0° or more (negative).

If the signal is absent, the CHECK ENGINE lamp (MIL) will light up and "harder" shifting may be experienced.
