Safety functions

If the gear lever is not in neutral when the car is stationary with the engine running, and neither the accelerator nor the brake pedal is depressed, "DISENGAGE GEAR" will light up in the SID after about three seconds. In another seven seconds the engine will be switched off automatically. This function prevents the car from moving off accidentally if the driver leaves the car with a gear engaged.

A combination of prolonged clutch slipping and high engine load will cause the "OVERHEATED CLUTCH" message to light up in the SID. Such a situation might arise if the driver uses the accelerator in an attempt to keep the car stationary for a lengthy period of time on a steep uphill gradient.

The engine can be started with reverse gear engaged but only if the brake pedal is first depressed. If the brake pedal is not depressed the SID will display "DISENGAGE GEAR".

If input shaft speed exceeds 7000 rpm after a gear change, the clutch will engage only partially so that engine speed is limited to 5000 rpm. At the same time, the SID will display "DISENGAGE GEAR".

If the speed of the input shaft is too low when changing gear, the "CHANGE DOWN" message will light up in the SID.
