Joint behind the MacPherson strut tower

This description refers to joining the wheel housing behind the suspension strut tower. For replacement of frame member, see Part of front frame member and Front wheel housing and front frame member (full replacement)

1. Mount the car on an aligning bench.

2. Remove the front wing.

3. Realign to the correct measurements if necessary.

4. Remove the reinforcement member on the outside of the wheel housing. It can be refitted if undamaged.

5. Drill out the spot welds and knock away the damaged part of the wheel housing.

6. Realign any deformed metalwork.

7. Position the new part of the wheel housing and fix it with a couple of welding clamps.

8. Adjust the position of the wheel housing exactly, checking the alignment by means of the aligning bench's coordinate measuring system.

9. Fit the front wing and bonnet in position and check the alignment of the wheel housing.

10. Check the accessible places on the wheel housing where it is possible to use spot welding equipment. Mark the places where holes for plug welding are to be drilled at other places.

11. Remove the wheel housing and drill holes for plug welding.

12. Use a grinder to clean the areas on the wheel housing and body that are to be welded.

13. Apply welding primer to the surfaces which are to be spot welded or plug welded. Use Teroson Zinkspray.

14. Fit the wheel housing in position and fix it with a couple of welding clamps. Adjust its position exactly, checking the alignment by means of the aligning bench's coordinate measuring system.

15. Fit the front wing and bonnet in position and check their alignment.

16. Remove the wing and bonnet.

17. Fit the wheel housing in place, securing it with spot welds and plug welds.

18. Grind the welds clean.

19. Use a grinder to clean the areas on the outside of the wheel housing where the reinforcement is to be welded.

20. Use a grinder to clean the areas on the reinforcement that are to be welded.

21. Fit the reinforcement in position and weld it in place.

22. Clean up the welds with Scotch-Brite to remove the top deposit of welding slag.

23. Wash off surplus welding primer. Welding primer makes for poorer adhesion of paint, filler and sealant.

24. Apply primer to all surfaces that have been ground clean. Use Standox 1K Füllprimer.

25. Seal joints and metal folds with putty. Use Terostat 1K-PUR.

26. Apply underseal to the underbody and in the wheel housing. Use Terostat 9320.

27. Paint the wheel housing and wing edges.

28. Apply anti-corrosion agent to the wheel housing after it has been painted. Use Terotex HV 400 or Mercasol 1.
