Rear outer wheel housing, five-door body
The rear outer wheel housing is an integrated part of the inner side panel. On replacement, cut the damaged wheel housing away from the inner side panel. Then cut the new wheel housing away from the spare part and spot-weld it to the inner side panel. Note that the joint on the fuel filler pipe is to be butt- welded to eliminate the danger of the filler pipe being crushed in the event of a collision.
1.
Mount the car on an aligning bench and realign to the correct measurements if necessary.
2.
Remove the side panel and rear door frame.
3.
Drill out the spot welds.
4.
Cut away the damaged wheel housing.
5.
Cut out the new wheel housing. Cut a bit above the wheel housing so that it is possible to spot weld the new wheel housing to the inner side panel. The new wheel housing should be cut by the filler pipe so it can be butt-welded.
6.
Position the new wheel housing and fix it with a few welding clamps.
7.
Drill holes for plug welding in places that cannot be reached with spot welding equipment.
8.
Remove the new wheel housing and use a grinder to clean the areas on it and the body that are to be welded.
9.
Apply welding primer to the surfaces which are to be spot welded or plug welded. Use Teroson Zinkspray.
10.
Position the new wheel housing and fix it with a few welding clamps.
11.
Fit the wheel housing in place, securing it with spot welds and plug welds.
12.
Weld the joint on the fuel filler pipe.
13.
Wash off surplus welding primer. Welding primer makes for poorer adhesion of paint, filler and sealant.
14.
Apply primer to all surfaces that have been ground clean. Use a high-quality primer such as Standox 1K Füllprimer.
15.
Seal joints and metal folds with putty. Use Terostat 1K-PUR.
16.
Apply underseal to the inside of the wheel housing. Use Terostat 9320.
17.
Apply anti-corrosion agent to the wheel housing after it has been painted. Use Terotex HV 400 or Mercasol 1.
