B1173 , B1178 , B1183 , B1188

Microswitch (B1173 - Header Latch, B1178 - Boot Well, B1183 - Fifth bow, B1188 - Tonneau) open circuit.

Fault symptoms

Soft top malfunctioning.

SID message “TOP CYCLE ERROR” may be displayed, depending on which DTC was generated.

Conditions

The following diagnostic trouble codes can be generated if there is an open circuit on the control module inputs for the microswitches.

Diagnostic help

The microswitch function can be read on the diagnostic tool.

- Connect the diagnostic tool.

- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

- Read the value for the relevant microswitch.

The diagnostic tool should display the following values if the microswitch is in working order:

OPEN for inactive microswitch.

CLOSED for active microswitch.

If there is a malfunction, the diagnostic tool can display the following:

OPEN CIRCUIT for a break in the control module input.

SHORT TO GROUND, for a short circuit to ground on the control module input.

SHORT TO BATT+, for a short circuit to battery + on the control module input.

REFERENCE VOLTAGE FAULT, for incorrect reference voltage to the microswitch.

Important

If communication cannot be established between the control module and the diagnostic tool, first check that the control module is “awake”.

Checking the wiring

Intermittent faults can occur during temporary short circuits and open circuits. Jiggle the wiring harness in several places and in various directions to detect problems in the wiring harness and connectors. Watch the multimeter, diagnostic tool and test lamp during the check.

Diagnostic procedure

1. Check the power supply to the microswitch

- Unplug the microswitch connector.

- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

- Measure the voltage with a multimeter on the relevant connector as follows:

between pin 1 and ground...............approx. 2.1V

between pin 3 and ground..............approx. 0.7V

Are all the readings correct?

yes

Continue with step 2.

no

Check and, if necessary, rectify the relevant lead. Continue with step 3.

2. Check the control module input

- Connect the diagnostic tool.

- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

- Read the status of the relevant microswitch

- Connect a jumper lead in the connector as follows:

between pins 2 and 3, the diagnostic tool should display CLOSED.

between pin 2 and 1, the diagnostic tool should display OPEN.

Is the function correct?

yes

Change the microswitch. Continue with step 3.

no

Check and, if necessary, rectify the lead to the relevant control module input. Continue with step 3.

3. Final check

- Clear the diagnostic trouble codes.

- Activate the soft top with the ROOF button and operate it for a few cycles

- Make sure the soft top is functioning correctly and that no diagnostic trouble codes are generated.

Has the diagnostic trouble code recurred?

yes

Change the control module as described in

no

The fault has been rectified.
