Flexible gaiter
joint in exhaust system
|
A Heat-dissipating wall
B Gastight wall (gaiter)
C Protective wire mesh
All Saab 900 M1994- and Saab 9000.
The service life of the flexible gaiter joint is directly affected by how much and
how often it is flexed in connection with service work requiring the exhaust system to be taken
apart. Excessive flexing will deform the heat-dissipating wall (A), causing it to lose some of its
heat-dissipating ability. The gastight wall (gaiter) (B) will also be deformed. This deformation
will lead to material fatigue in the gastight wall with cracks and consequent leakage as a
result.
If the front exhaust pipe section is left hanging after being disconnected from the
rest of the exhaust system in the course of repair or service work, it must on no account be
bent further down. The maximum permissible deflection at the flexible gaiter joint is that
caused by the exhaust pipe's own
weight.
