Exhaust system

Exhaust system

General

The exhaust system is designed to carry the exhaust gases from the engine and to have a low resistance to flow, a low noise level and a long useful life.

It consists of four parts: front pipe (with catalytic converter on B234i/B204L), intermediate pipe (B234i/B204L) or catalytic converter (B206i/B258i), middle silencer and rear silencer. The middle silencer is of absorption type for all engine variants while the rear silencer is of absorption type for the turbo variant and a reflection type for the fuel injection variants. The exhaust system is protected from corrosion in that all pipes are of chrome steel. In addition, the silencers are made of corrosion-retarding 12%% chromium steel plate. All engine variants are fitted with a cast exhaust manifold except B258i, which has a stainless steel rear exhaust manifold.

The joints are of flange type ("ball-joint") with a two-piece clamp which is pulled together with 2 bolts. This facilitates replacement and makes for a good fit. None of the joints, apart from the one between the exhaust manifold and the front pipe on the B206i B258i, have gaskets.

Suspension

The exhaust system is suspended at five points in rubber hangers (in certain variants there is also a stay between the engine and the front pipe). In order to provide good ground clearance, the exhaust system is semi-enclosed in a channel in the floor.

Heat shields

Heat shields are fitted over the most heat-intensive zones. They are made of either aluminium or galvanized sheet metal, depending on their location, and they protect vulnerable places from heat radiation. The number of heat shields depends on the engine variant to which the exhaust system has been adapted.
