Engine fails to start, quick test with test lamp

1. Check the following fuses:

maxi fuse no. 2 (+30 supply to ECM, main relay and fuel pump relay)

28 (+30 supply to ECM)

17 (+15 supply to ECM)

32 (fuel pump relay supply to fuel pump)

16B (main relay supply to injectors and ignition discharge module)

2. Ignition switched on. Check that the malfunction indicator lamp (CHECK ENGINE) lights up with a steady glow for approx. 3 seonds. Also check the fuel level.

if the malfunction indicator lamp is not lit, there is no +15 supply to the ECM

if the malfunction indicator lamp is lit dimly or flashes, there is no +30 supply or ground to the ECM (in this fault a buzzing sound can also be heard from the main and fuel pump relays at the same time as the tachometer is moving upwards on the scale)

3. The main relay supplies the injectors and ignition discharge module with power. The function of the main relay should therefore be checked as follows:

Connect the test lamp to the connector of the IAC valve

Switch off the ignition and remove fuse 28 for 5 seconds

refit fuse 28

ignition switched on - check that the test lamp is lit for approx. 6 seconds and then goes out. If this does not happen, see "Fault diagnosis, main relay".

when the test lamp has gone out, run the starter motor, the test lamp must then light up again. If not, the ECM does not have information from the crankshaft position sensor, see "Fault diagnosis, crankshaft position sensor"

4. The fuel pump relay supplies the fuel pump with power. The function of the fuel pump relay should therefore be checked as follows:

Switch off the ignition and remove fuse 28 for 5 seconds

refit fuse 28

ignition switched on - listen to find out whether the fuel pump is working. The fuel pump must operate for approx. 2 seconds. If this does not happen, see "Fault diagnosis, fuel pump relay".

5. Check the following:

as described in 3, that the power supply from the main relay reaches the ignition discharge module and injectors. If this does not happen, carry out fault diagnosis on the leads to crimped connection J67.

that the ignition discharge module produces sparks. If this does not happen, see "Fault diagnosis, ignition"

that there is fuel pressure. If this is not the case, see Service Manual "2:3 Fuel and induction system" .
