Valve housing

To remove

1. 6-cyl: Remove the engine covers.

2. Remove the transmission's breather hose.

3. Hook the lifting beam on the engine and raise the car.

4. Remove the air shields.

5. Remove the engine pad retaining bolts.

6. Remove the ground cable and engine mounting bracket retaining bolts.

7. Place an oil pan under the gearbox and remove the cooler hoses. Plug the holes and bend the hoses aside.

8. Remove the bolt securing the temperature sensor's cover (and also the valve housing cover).

9. Remove the remaining 8 bolts.

10. Lift up the valve housing cover and turn it to the right of the engine mounting. Use a rubber mallet to knock the cover loose.

11. Remove the nine valve housing retaining bolts.

Note

Note

Start with the two retaining bolts at bottom left which secure the cover for the fluid passages, saving the two top retaining bolts until last. The bolts are of 3 different lengths.

Note

Important

The passages are filled with transmission fluid.

12. Carefully remove the manual valve from the selector lever out of the retaining eye and carefully lift out the valve housing.

Note

Note

Make sure that the two O-rings fitted inside the valve housing do not fall out.

To fit

1. Thoroughly clean the sealing surfaces on the valve housing cover and transmission, leaving no residue of old sealing compound.

2. Lift the valve housing into position.

Note

Note

Carefully move the selector lever's arm into place and fit the valve housing on the gearbox.

3. Fit the nine valve housing retaining bolts and tighten them.

Tightening torque: 7 Nm (5 lbf ft).

Note

Note

The bolts are of three different lengths.

4. Apply a bead of sealing compound to the transmission's sealing surface.

Note

Note

Make sure that all fluid has been carefully wiped off the surface so that the sealing compound will adhere properly. Smear the entire sealing surface with a thin and even layer of sealing compound (44 91 056). If the transmission has been removed, the sealing compound can be applied to the sealing surface of the cover.

5. Position the cover.

6. Fit the cover with the 8 retaining bolts, not the bolt securing the cover for the temperature sensor.

Tightening torque: 25 Nm (18.5 lbf ft).

7. Fit the temperature sensor's cover.

Tightening torque: 25 Nm (18.5 lbf ft).

8. Connect the hoses to the transmission. Make sure that they do not rest against the subframe.

9. Fit the bracket for the engine mounting.

10. Connect the ground cable.

11. Fit the engine pad.

12. Fit the air shields.

13. Lower the car and remove the lifting beam.
