"DISENGAGE GEAR" displayed even when brake pedal is depressed

Fault symptom

"DISENGAGE GEAR" is displayed on the SID and the engine stops even when the brake pedal is depressed and the car is stationary and in gear.

Only a few model year 1996 cars manufactured in the autumn of 1995 suffer from this fault. In regard to M97 and later control modules it does not matter which switch comes first.

Condition

The brake pedal switch shows ON before the brake lights switch.

Diagnostic help

The relationship between the switches can be determined by means of the Scan tool diagnostics instrument.

- Connect the Scan tool diagnostics instrument and select the "READ ON/OFF" menu.

- Select "BRAKE PEDAL SWITCH" and press "ALT".

- Select "BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH" and press "ON/ENTER".

- Engage a gear. The Scan tool diagnostics instrument should show OFF for both switches.

- Slowly depress the brake pedal and check which of the switches shows ON first. The brake light switch should be first.

Diagnostic procedure

1. Depress the brake pedal, withdraw the push rod in both switches and abruptly release the brake pedal. Check functionality as described under "Diagnostic help".

Is functionality OK?

yes

The steps taken to rectify the fault were correct.

no

Continue with point 2.

2 Change the brake light switch, see Service Manual 3:1 "Electrical system". The new switch must have part number 42 33 342.

3 If the brake light switch previously fitted had a different part number, the electrical connections in the brake light switch connector must be changed, see illustration (which shows the connector from the cable side).

4 Plug in the connector and check functionality as described under "Diagnostic help".
