Fault diagnosis schedule

Points to remember when diagnosing faults

It is impossible to give any general rules for the procedure to follow when diagnosing faults in each individual case.

Depending on the fault symptoms and other information available, one method may be best in some situations and another method best in others.

However, the following points may serve as guidance when carrying out fault diagnosis.

1. Always start fault diagnosis by reading the diagnostic trouble codes, if any, with the Scan tool diagnostics instrument. Use the "ALL SYSTEMS" command to read all the car's diagnostic trouble codes. Make a note of the diagnostic trouble codes or save them in the Scan tool diagnostics instrument's internal memory with the "SAVE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES" command.

Readouts of internally saved diagnostic trouble codes can be obtained by means of the "RECALL FAULT CODES" command.

Certain fault diagnosis procedures require connectors to be unplugged while the ignition switch is in the ON position. This results in the generation of diagnostic trouble codes. Therefore, always clear any diagnostic trouble codes on completion of fault diagnosis. All diagnostic trouble codes can be cleared by using the "CLEAR" command.

2. Check fuses 10, 17 and 36.

3. Check all connectors for corroded contact pins, looseness and anything else that may have an adverse effect on good contact and conductivity. If contact problems are suspected, use KONTAKT 61 contact spray (part No. 45-30 04 520) on the female contacts in the connectors concerned.

4. When connecting a BOB into circuit, first check the power supply to pins 18 and 37 and make sure that pin 19 is properly grounded.

5. Keep an eye on the "CHECK ENGINE" lamp, ABS lamp and other warning lamps to see whether they light up. Diagnostic trouble codes for the Sensonic system may refer to consequential faults which will be rectified automatically when the primary cause has been eliminated.

Important

Since Sensonic diagnostic trouble codes are not cleared automatically, use of the "CLEAR FAULT CODES" command is recommended after each service schedule.
