Driving off

The car can be driven off in first, second or reverse gear. If the engine is started with reverse gear engaged and the car is to be reversed, the gear lever must first be moved to neutral and then into reverse gear again. This feature prevents the car from being inadvertently set in motion when the engine is started.

When you have selected the desired gear (reverse, 1st or 2nd), the clutch will be engaged according to engine speed and throttle position.

If you select an inappropriate gear (3rd, 4th or 5th), "CHANGE DOWN" will light up on the SID (Saab Information Display).

Higher engine speed alone is not sufficient to cause the clutch to close (engage). The throttle must also have left the idling position. This function prevents the car from being driven off at higher engine speeds, such as when starting from cold.
