Before replacing a control module

Before replacing a control module

When all tests have been completed in accordance with the rectification program to the particular diagnostic trouble code or through service manual fault diagnosis, without any fault being traced, it is natural to assume that the electronic control module is faulty. Observe the following points before you definitely identify the ABS electronic control module as the cause of the problem.

1. Check once again that all tests in the codes fault diagnostic scheme have been carried out.

2. Study the particular circuits wiring diagram and familiarise yourself with its operation. Consult the sections in the technical description and the electrical operation description section in Service manual "3:2 Electrical system, wiring diagram. The electrical wiring diagram in this book is determined approx. 10 weeks before the start of production. In case of any deviation in comparison with the problem vehicle from the corresponding wiring diagram in the Service Manual "3:2 Electrical system, wiring diagram" regard this as a reference.

3. When fitting/removing the control unit, remember that it is sensitive to electrostatic discharge.

4. Check all grounding points and the voltage supply to the electronic control module. If you have checked this before, check it once again.

5. If the suggested diagnostic procedure routine fails to correctly rectify the problem, attempt to trace the problem through testing and analyse "Test reading, electronic control module connections".

6. Experience from M93-M95 shows that 80%% of all the electronic control modules that were returned in connection with the warranty repairs were not faulty. Be very reluctant to change the electronic control module. Unnecessary replacements of electronic control modules constitutes a large expense for Saab Automobile and their dealers. Think through all likely fault reasons before replacing the electronic control module!

7. If the original fault remains, despite that, the ABS electronic control module must be changed.
