Scrapping cars with airbags and seat belt tensioners
Scrapping cars with airbags and seat belt tensioners |
To avoid injuries in connection with the scrapping of cars with airbags and seat-belt tensioners, the non-activated airbags and seat-belt tensioners must be made unusable through electrical detonation as described below before the car is scrapped. These safety measures are necessary because the pyrotechnical units can cause injuries if not handled in a workmanlike manner.
Scrapping seat belt tensioners
Seat belt tensioners should be triggered using detonating device 84 71 104 (B) and cable assembly 86 11 469 (A).
1. |
Ignition in OFF position. Remove the negative cable on the battery. Cover the negative terminal.
2. |
Push the seat forward and tip forward the backrest.
3. |
Remove the covers on the front and rear scuff plates.
4. |
Undo and remove the scuff plates.
5. |
Remove the screws securing the trim on the B-pillar.
6. |
Remove the cover, detach the seat-belt strap guide from the B-pillar and take off the trim on the B-pillar.
7. |
Remove the plastic protector over the belt tensioner.
8. |
Remove the connector from the seat-belt tensioner and connect the detonating device connector 86 11 469 to the seat-belt tensioner.
9. |
Fit the upper strap guide in its mounting (to protect the B pillar trim on detonation).
10. |
Check that the seat belt runs freely and can be pulled back approx. 180 mm without damaging anything.
11. |
Take the detonating device to the engine compartment. Shut all the doors and windows, check that there is no one in the car.
12. |
Connect the clips of the detonating device to the battery terminals.
13. |
Stand in front of the car and press the detonating button.
Scrapping of airbag
The detonating device consists of a two-conductor cable approx. 15 metres long with push buttons, battery clips and connector for connecting to the cable assembly. The battery to which the detonating device is connected should be in good condition.
1. |
Position the car outdoors. The safety zone from the car is 10 metres. No people or objects are to be present in this area.
2. |
Make sure that nobody is in the car and that there are no loose objects in the front seat or on the dashboard.
3. |
Remove the negative cable on the battery.
4. |
Steering wheel airbag:
4.a. |
Remove the lower steering column cover.
4.b. |
Unplug the orange coloured connector H2-52. Plug in the detonating device connector to the cable assembly 86 11 477 (B). Connect the cable assembly to the orange connector.
5. |
Passenger airbag:
5.a. |
Remove the glove-box, see the chapter Airbag, passenger
.
5.b. |
Remove the connector from the airbag. Plug in the detonating device connector 86 11 469 (A). Connect the cable assembly to the airbag.
6. |
Run the lead through the door opening and close the door. Check that all doors and windows are closed.
7. |
Position a battery 10 metres from the car. Connect the detonating device to the battery. Check that nobody is to be found inside the safety zone of 10 metres from the car.
8. |
Detonate the airbag by pressing the detonating buttons. When the airbag is detonated an explosion can be heard and white smoke can be seen in the cabin.
9. |
Remove the detonating device cables from the battery directly after the airbag has been detonated. Wait 30 minutes before continuing work so that the airbag gas generator has time to cool down.
