Passive safety system SRS (Supplementary Restraint System)

Passive safety system SRS (Supplementary Restraint System)

A new SRS system has been introduced on the Saab 900 starting from model year 1995. The system checks the seat-belt tensioners and airbags. The seat-belt tensioners are pyrotechnical type.

All cars are equipped with driver's airbag. All cars with US specifications are also equipped with a passenger airbag. On certain other markets, a passenger airbag is available as a factory-fitted option.

1. Knee shields, driver side

2. Airbag, driver's side

3. Airbag, passenger side

4. Knee shield, passenger side

5. SRS control module

6. Pyrotechnical seat-belt tensioners

The SRS system is a complement to the car's seat belt system and increases impact protection considerably in case of head-on collisions. A collision corresponding to a speed exceeding 25 km/h against a barrier will cause the airbag to inflate. In combination with the seat belts, this will prevent the driver and front-seat passenger from hitting the steering wheel, dashboard and windscreen.

The airbag on the driver's side is located in the centre of the steering wheel while the airbag on the passenger side is located above the glove box. The entire system is controlled by a control module situated behind the handbrake on the tunnel under the floor console. The control module detects a collision and sends a pulse of current to the electric detonators, which activate the gas generators to inflate the airbags. The control module tests the SRS system continuously and stores any diagnostic trouble codes.

To prevent the driver or passenger sliding in under the facia during a collision, there are knee shields under the facia.
