B1318, B1323 , B1328
Symptom: The soft top cannot be operated.
Potentiometer ( B1318 - Fifth bow, B1323 - Tonneau, B1328 - Main motor) shorted/open circuit.
Fault symptoms
The soft top cannot be operated.
Note
Diagnostic trouble code B1309 can also be generated when there is an open circuit on one of the potentiometers.
Conditions
These diagnostic trouble codes can be generated if there is an open circuit on the potentiometer input of the control module.
Diagnostic help
The position of the potentiometer can be read with the diagnostic tool.
-
Connect the diagnostic tool.
-
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
-
Read the value for the relevant potentiometer
If everything is functioning correctly, the diagnostic tool should display the current potentiometer values, which should lie between 15 and 240 depending on the position of the soft top. The value 0 is displayed if there is an open circuit or short circuit.
If all the potentiometer values are incorrect, the fault is in the common supply to the potentiometers from control module pin 29 (K42) to crimp connection J32, or from pin 15 (K42) to crimp connector J117.
The voltage on the control module potentiometer feed measured against ground should be:
Pin 15.............5V.
Pin 29........... <0.1V.
Diagnostic procedure
1 Check the power supply to the potentiometer
-
Unplug the potentiometer
-
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
-
Measure the voltage with a multimeter as follows:
•
between pin 1 and ground............approx. 5V
•
between pin 3 and ground.................< 0.1V
Are all the readings correct?
Continue with step 2.
Check and, if necessary, rectify the relevant lead. Continue with step 3.
2. Check the control module input
-
Connect the diagnostic tool.
-
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
-
Read the current potentiometer value.
-
Connect a jumper lead in the connector as follows:
•
between pin 2 and pin 1
the diagnostic tool should display approx. 250
•
between pin 2 and pin 3
the diagnostic tool should display approx. 0
Are all the values correct?
Change the potentiometer. Continue with step 3.
Check and if necessary rectify the relevant lead from the connector pin 2 to the potentiometer input on the control module. Continue with step 3.
3. Final check
-
Clear the diagnostic trouble codes.
-
Activate the soft top with the ROOF button and operate it for a few cycles
-
Make sure the soft top is functioning correctly and that no diagnostic trouble codes are generated.
Has the diagnostic trouble code recurred?
Change the control module as described in
The fault has been rectified.
