Sump (in situ)

Sump (in situ)

To remove

1. Remove the dipstick and stuff a cloth into the end of the tube. Fit lifting beam 83 94 850 to the engine and raise it slightly. Disconnect the oxygen (Lambda) sensor leads, undo the cable clamp and the clip.

2. Raise the car, drain the oil and position a lifting table under the engine.

3. Remove the front wheels and the spoiler sections. Undo the joint between the front exhaust pipe and the intermediate pipe.

4. Unbolt the front exhaust pipe from the turbocharger or exhaust manifold. Remove the catalytic converter from its bracket or rubber mountings and lower the exhaust pipe.

5. Remove the end piece, steering swivel member on both sides and the rear engine mounting. Use tool 89 96 696. Raise the lifting table, undo the other bolts and lower the subframe.

6. Remove the protective plate and sump. Do not remove the guide sleeve from the cylinder block. Wipe off all surplus oil.

To fit

1. Check that there are no impurities or other foreign matter in the sump and make sure that its flange is scrupulously clean. Use Benzine.

2. Apply an even bead of flange sealant, part no. 93 21 795, to the sealing surface of the oil sump and fit the oil sump.

Tightening torque: 22 Nm (16 lbf ft).

3. Refit the cover plate.

4. Offer up the sub-frame and bolt it in place.

Tightening torques

front 115 Nm (85 lbf ft)

middle 190 Nm (140.6 lbf ft)

-rear 110 Nm + 75° (81.4 lbf ft + 75°)

5. Fit the nuts securing the end pieces and tighten them.

Tightening torque: 75 Nm (55.5 lbf ft).

6. Clean the exhaust pipe joints.

7. Fit the bolt securing the catalytic converter to the bracket on the engine but do not tighten it. Screw the front exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold or turbocharger. Before assembly, apply Molycote 1000 to the threaded studs on the turbocharger.

8. Tighten the bolt securing the catalytic converter to the bracket on the engine and screw together the joints under the car.

9. Fit the spoiler sections and road wheels.

Tightening torque, wheel bolts 110 Nm (81 lbf ft).

10. Check that the oil drain plug is tight, lower the car to the floor and fill up with oil. Put back the dipstick and reconnect the oxygen (Lambda) sensor cables.

11. Remove the lifting beam, warm up the engine and check for leakage round the sump.
