P0340
Camshaft position
Symptom of fault
The CHECK ENGINE lamp (MIL) is on.
Conditions
Engine running. More than 5000 engine revolutions since starting. No camshaft
position.
Diagnostic help
The cause of the fault could be:
• defective spark plugs
- defects
- sooty
- damaged
• fault in wiring harness
- an open circuit in one of the leads connected to pin 17 or 18 of the control module
• severe misfiring
. Intermittent faults may occur as a result of
occasional short circuits and breaks in the wiring. Jiggle the leads and in-line connectors at
several places and in different directions to reveal faults in the wiring harness. Observe the
multimeter, ISAT scan tool or test lamp while carrying out this check.
Diagnostic procedure
1. Check additional diagnostic trouble codes in the Trionic
system
-
|
Obtain readouts of all diagnostic
trouble codes using the ISAT scan tool.
|
Are any of the above diagnostic trouble codes present?
Continue fault diagnosis as described for the appropriate diagnostic trouble
code.
Continue with point 2.
2. Check the ignition discharge module's
connections
-
|
Unplug the ignition discharge
module's 10-pin connector.
|
-
|
Ignition switch in ON
position.
|
-
|
Take voltage readings on the
female connector sockets
|
|
•
|
pin 8 to battery
negative
|
|
•
|
pin 9 to battery negative
|
The readings obtained should be about 10 V.
Are the readings OK?
Change the spark plugs and continue with point 3.
Rectify the lead in question and proceed to point 3.
3. Final check
-
|
Clear the diagnostic trouble
code
|
-
|
Implementation of driving
cycle:
|
|
•
|
Run the engine at idling speed
until the radiator fan starts, then switch off the engine.
|
|
•
|
Start the engine and run it at idling speed for 6
minutes.
|
-
|
Evaluation of driving cycle: Check
whether the diagnostic trouble code has recurred.
|
Has the diagnostic trouble code recurred?
Try fitting a replacement ignition discharge module and, after a repetition of the
driving cycle, check whether the diagnostic trouble code is generated afresh.
The remedial measure taken was correct.
Is the diagnostic trouble code generated afresh after the ignition discharge module
has been changed?
Refit the original ignition discharge module and then continue as described on
.
Scrap the original ignition discharge module. The remedial measure taken was
correct.
