Starting problems in cars with anti-theft alarm without VSS

Cars affected

Saab 900 3D/5D M95-98 and Saab 900 CV M95-98 from VIN S7009999 inclusive with anti-theft alarm without VSS.

Background

Starting problems may arise due to the relay contacts supplying power to the engine management system oxidizing and preventing the flow of current. This means that the starter motor will crank but the engine will not start.

This SI describes how to remove the oxide from the relay contacts and subsequently increase the current to prevent further oxidation.

This solution entails connecting a lamp, for 10 seconds, via BOB 86 11 139 to burn off the oxide that has formed on the contact surfaces of the relay. Once this has been done, a resistor can be permanently connected to increase the current to approx. 200 mA.
