Wear marks on soft-top cloth

Cars affected

Saab 900 CV M97- M98

Background

There is a risk of the soft-top cloth being folded incorrectly when lowered. The soft-top cloth may then rub against the bottom of the tonneau cover causing it to be damaged.

When raised, any damage can be seen as chafe marks on each side of the soft top, just behind the second bow.

These measures should be taken after a customer complaint.

Parts required

51 10 457 Chafing guard (2 pcs) (CA: 30577465)

48 56 860 Pop rivets (2 pcs) (CA: 30569755)

48 56 878 Washer (2 pcs) (CA: 30569756)

Procedure

1. Lower the soft-top but let the tonneau cover stay open.

2. Undo the two screws holding the corners of the headlining to the first bow.

3. Detach the headlining from the velcro strip.

4. Fold down the cloth tabs and unscrew the seven screws holding the headlining to the first bow.

5. Place the soft top so that it is open half way.

6. Mark the ends of the headliner retaining strip on the second bow. Then remove the strip holding the headlining to the second bow.

7. Mark the ends of the headlining retaining strip on the third bow. Then remove the strip holding the headlining to the third bow.

8. Check the length of the side elastic straps at the front in their relaxed position. The normal distance from the edge binding to the rivet is 210-215 mm. If the length is 165-170 mm, the side elastic strap has already been shortened. If they are already shortened, continue with step 13.

9. Drill out the pop rivets securing the front side elastic straps to the front rails.

10. Make new holes for the rivets in the side elastic straps so that the overall length from the edge binding to the new hole will be 165 mm.

11. Shorten the side elastic straps so that the distance from the rivet hole to the end is about 25 mm.

12. Refit the side elastic straps to the front rails with blind rivets, 48 56 860, and washers, 48 56 878.

13. Raise the soft top to the closed and locked position.

14. Mark the lateral position of the anti-ballooning strips on the second and third bows.

15. Undo the anti-ballooning strips from the second and third bows. They are held in place with reusable tacky glue.

16. Tension the strips enough to prevent the outer roof from sagging between the bows and rewrap the cloth around the second and third bows respectively.

17. Open the soft top half way and refit the headlining to the third and second bows.

18. Lower the soft top so that only the tonneau cover is open and refit the headlining to the first bow.

19. Fit the two chafing guards 51 10 457 to the tonneau cover as shown in the illustration.

20. Vacuum the inside of the car to remove any cuttings, etc. that may be present.

21. Close the soft top.
