Piston protrusion, measurement
Selection of cylinder head gasket
•
The thickness of the cylinder head gasket is determined by how far the pistons protrude above the sealing surface of the cylinder block.
•
Three thicknesses are available. See the table under
Engine block.
•
Before measurement, clean the surfaces carefully to remove all carbon deposits and the like.
•
Measure height of each piston at two different points.
•
Before measurement, make sure the piston is at top dead centre as follows:
2.
Position the measuring jig on the cylinder block gasket surface so that the tip of the dial indicator is in contact with the block.
3.
Zero the dial indicator.
4.
Position the measuring jig above one of the piston's measuring points, see illustration.
5.
Turn the crankshaft in the direction of rotation of the engine while checking the dial indicator. Read off and note the maximum value shown on the dial indicator.
6.
Repeat the previous step for the second measurement point on piston.
7.
Calculate the average value for each piston.
8.
Make a note of the maximum value of the three pistons in each cylinder bank.
9.
Based on the maximum value, select a suitable gasket from the table, refer to
Engine block
.
